The 2015 beaten finalists entered 2019 as one of the most complete teams in world cricket with all the ingredients to be one of the real favourites for the World Cup.
Despite a strong start to the tournament, they only scraped through the group phase in fourth place before stunning India in the semi-finals. Many regarded their bowling attack to be the best in the tournament, and this was demonstrated in their semi-final against India they reduced them to 24-4.
The final against hosts England was arguably the most exciting match in cricket history. New Zealand looked to be heading to victory after containing England’s big hitting batting line up, however Stokes inspired England and took them to a super over. Needing 16 from their over, New Zealand came agonisingly short as Martin Guptill was run out attempting a second run from the last ball which would have won them the World Cup. A devastating end for the Kiwi’s who many say deserved so much more.
